Learning to fly is easier, and usually much less expensive, when someone is beside you. Our volunteer pilots can help you understand the controls, inspect your aircraft, practice basic flight skills, and avoid the most common beginner mistakes.
No previous flying experience is required.

After submitting a training request, a Valley RC Flyers member will review your information and contact you to discuss your experience, equipment, and scheduling options. Whenever possible, we will match you with a pilot familiar with your aircraft and radio equipment.
Because instruction is provided by volunteer club members, training sessions are arranged individually rather than held on a fixed weekly schedule.

2. A club member will contact you
A volunteer instructor will reach out to discuss your goals and determine the best next step.
They may recommend:

Meeting at the club field

Inspecting your airplane before attempting a flight

Making setup or repair adjustments

Beginning with a trainer-style airplane
-
Using a connected “buddy-box” radio system when compatible
3. Meet at the field and start learning
A typical first session may include:

A preflight inspection
-
Basic field and safety procedures
-
Understanding the airplane’s controls
-
Taxiing and ground handling
-
Straight-and-level flight
-
Gentle turns and basic orientation
-
Approaches and landing practice
-
Battery and equipment safety
The instructor may handle takeoff and landing during the first session while allowing you to control the airplane at a safe altitude. The exact lesson will depend on your equipment, experience, weather, and comfort level.
When is training available?
During the primary outdoor flying season, we can often connect a new pilot with a volunteer instructor within one to three weeks. Evening and weekend sessions are generally the easiest to arrange. Training may be delayed by strong winds, rain, field conditions, or limited instructor availability. Winter instruction opportunities are more limited and may depend on scheduled indoor flying sessions.
Before purchasing an airplane:
You do not need to buy anything before contacting us.
In fact, contacting the club before purchasing an airplane may save you money and frustration. Some aircraft that are advertised as “easy to fly” are too fast, too small, or too fragile for practical beginner training.

What should I bring?
Once a session is scheduled, your instructor will tell you exactly what to bring. This may include:

Your airplane and transmitter

Charged flight batteries

Your battery charger
-
Spare propellers or common replacement parts

Your FAA TRUST certificate or registration information, when applicable

Sunglasses, sunscreen, water, and appropriate footwear
Is training free?
Valley RC Flyers members volunteer their time to help introduce people to the hobby. There is no charge for an initial discussion or equipment review. Any requirements for continued instruction, club membership, AMA membership, aircraft registration, or use of club facilities will be explained before training begins.
